A good friend of mine just had a minor stroke. We have worked in the same circles for years. You never think about anything like that happening to you until it happens to someone close by.

The first thing I did (after getting his shifts covered at work) was to think about what I can do to help prevent the same thing happening to me. I got all this from the National Stroke Association website.

A lot of this information is pretty basic and you should be doing anyways. Don’t smoke, don’t drink. Obviously. At least I would think this would be common sense, but you would never know.

So here is a list:

  1. Know your blood pressure.
  2. Find out if you have atrial fibrillation.
  3. If you smoke, stop.
  4. If you drink alcohol, do so in moderation.
  5. Find out if you have high cholesterol
  6. If you are diabetic…
  7. Exercise.
  8. Enjoy a lower sodium (salt), lower fat diet.
  9. Circulation (movement of the blood through the heart and blood vessels) problems.
  10. Know the Symptoms of Stroke.

You are welcome.
